Matches of Matches of Matches: Hinge Brand Space

Exhibition case study

Reimagining dating as an experience, rather than an interface

Immersive space Interactive multi-zone installation Sensor-based experience

A pop-up space designed for the dating app Hinge, exploring a mode of connection rooted in presence, atmosphere, and a touch of human unpredictability. Developed as a case study during the five-week workshop “Interactive Exhibition Design: Immersion and New Technologies” led by Charlotte van den Bosch.
The project translates Hinge’s “designed to be deleted” ethos into a spatial journey where each visitor receives a simple RFID ring that quietly reads choices and rhythms, allowing the space to respond subtly as they move through it.

Design challenge

Digital platforms foreground appearance and reduce encounters to swipes. The challenge was to build a real-world environment where people can connect through data-supported, spatial cues—through presence rather than performance. How can online dating feel more natural once it moves off the screen?

Outcome

A five-part experiential path that mirrors the emotional stages of meeting someone: self-awareness, sensing, resonance, shared play, and closure. The RFID ring gathers simple proximity signals, enabling each space to reshape itself—light fields that merge, textile membranes that contract, or micro-scenarios that reveal character. Instead of matching people, the system creates conditions where connections can emerge naturally and without pressure.
